Myanmar Silver Lining Earthquake Disaster

Dear Supporters and Friends,

March 28 Update:

A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, with the epicenter near Mandalay, close to Pyin Oo Lwin, where our Silver Lining Family Village is located. The tremors were intense and lasted several minutes.

At the time, we were on a field trip with over 170 children and a visiting U.S. team at a nearby park. When the quake hit, I was with about 30 children in the forest. The ground shook violently, but the children remained incredibly brave. I held them close to keep them safe, and thankfully, no one was hurt. Though shaken, the children soon regained their smiles and continued their activities.

The earthquake caused severe damage across Myanmar, particularly in Mandalay:

  • The Mandalay airport was damaged and closed, forcing us to cancel our flight and drive over 12 hours to Yangon instead.

  • Buildings collapsed, including a six-story school where teachers and students remain trapped. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

Current Needs & Next Steps:

  • Safety during travel: We are making a long journey by road to Yangon and hope for safe conditions.

  • Support for affected areas: Many in Mandalay and nearby towns need urgent help, especially those trapped or displaced.

  • Care for the children: While they appear calm, we’ll continue providing comfort and stability after this frightening experience.

March 29 Update:

After an 18.5-hour drive from Pyin Oo Lwin to Yangon, we arrived safely at 4 a.m. The roads were heavily damaged, requiring alternate routes. Along the way, we saw collapsed buildings and homes-heartbreaking scenes of loss. The visiting team has now departed Yangon.

Myanmar faces immense challenges-war, poverty, and now this disaster. Many children have lost parents, leaving them vulnerable. In response, we plan to expand our Family Village to welcome more children in need, offering them safety and care.

How You Can Help:

  • Support relief efforts for affected communities.

  • Help us provide shelter and care for newly orphaned children.
